Dr Emma McGibbon

About me

Dr Emma McGibbon is a Clinical Psychologist who works with children and young people with neurodevelopmental differences, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, long-term health conditions, and associated difficulties with emotional wellbeing, behaviour and learning. She specialises in providing psychological support to children and their families, as well as to support workers and carers.

Since qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist in 2008, Emma has worked in a range of NHS children’s services. Emma has worked in Great Ormond Street Hospital's Neurodisability Service for over ten years. Alongside this since 2012 she has also undertaken work with children and their families in private practice. As well as working with children and families who self-refer, she works as a treating clinician in medico-legal cases and prepares expert witness reports for court. Her therapeutic approach always takes into account the needs of the whole family. She works with children and families to find out their therapeutic goals and uses a range of interventions using a systemic approach and using techniques including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Narrative techniques, as well as carrying out teaching and training.

Emma is also the lead psychologist in the adult Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) clinic with adults at St Thomas’ Hospital in London within the Rare Disease Centre. She therefore has an understanding and expertise in how medical conditions can affect people across the whole lifespan.

A note from Emma

I know that seeking support from a psychologist can feel like a big step. I have a non-judgmental and open approach when working with individuals. I am dedicated to working with children, their families and carers, to make changes in order to help them to live their best lives.
